The "La Chaux-de-Fonds/Le Locle, watchmaking urbanization" candidature dossier was signed on Monday 17 December 2007 in Le Locle by the Director of the Federal Office of Culture Jean-Frédéric Jauslin, Councillor of State Bernard Soguel, city councillor and Mayor of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds Laurent Kurth and city councillor and Mayor of the city of Le Locle Denis de la Reusille.
A few days later on Friday 21 December 2007, this document was officially submitted by Oliver Martin, representative of the Federal Office of Culture, to Ernst Iten, the ambassador to Unesco in Paris, who presented it to the Unesco World Heritage Centre.
The year 2008 has been devoted to expert appraisal of the dossier.
The candidature «La Chaux-de-Fonds/Le Locle, Watchmaking town planning» was granted the 27th of June 2009 by the Heritage Committee and verified as exceptional value for humanity in the context of industrial and scenic development.
